In all Arab cities there is enough freedom to form private cultural groups and foundations and get hold of funds. Importantly, foundations in places like Beirut, Amman and Cairo have begun to form cooperative networks and exchange works and shows. We can now talk about an "alternative" Arab culture that is in the process of taking shape.

Seuls les intellectuels et les artistes ont pu échapper au conflit des civilisations car ils sont préalablement armés de leur esprit ouvert et de leur désir de dialoguer. Les réseaux et les projets culturels ont encouragé la création d'un microcosme où les artistes se connaissent et travaillent souvent ensemble, mais le reste du monde ?

Interview with YOUSRY NASRALLAH: film director (Egypt)
Mutual understanding and such concepts are, in my opinion usually a big fantasy. Mutualunderstanding is predicated on the desire to understand. ... Mutual understanding begins with understanding one's own issues, at the very least. My main concern is not mutual understanding but insight. We have an amazing capacity to blind ourselves to our problems, instead of confronting ourselves. That's why I make movies, not so that the Europeans will understand me, but so that I can understand myself better.

Ce que je sais c'est que lorsque des experts européens viennent observer ce qui se fait ici,il arrive parfois qu'ils me demandent: "pourquoi tu fais ça et pas ça, pourquoi tu ne fais pas plutôt comme ça" et souvent, après plusieurs mois, lorsqu'ils reviennent ils me disent :"c'est toi qui avais raison, chez nous ça ne marche pas de cette façon là".

Interview with SOFIANE HADJADJ: co-director of Barzakh Editions (Algeria)
When Selma Hellal and I created our publishing house in February 2000, our project -naïve andclumsy in its business plan- was to publish young Algerian writers (novelists, short story writers, poets, etc.), to publish Algerian literature for Algerian readers living in Algeria. We conceived this project in a very particular context: that of Algeria at the end of the 1990s. Why did I say that our project was naïve and clumsy? Because whoever says publishing says "book business"....
