StrangerFestival 2008 trailer Nederlands
Van 3-5 Juli hebben wij het StrangerFestival in Ansterdam georganiseerd. Een internationaal video festival voor jonge video makers en liefhebbers. 300 jongeren uit alle hoeken van Europa hadden wij uitgenodigd om aan professionele workshops deel te nemen, creatieve ontmoetingen te hebben en misschien een Award te winnen van één van de categorieën. Deze trailer werd voor het festival breed online door heel Europa getoond om aandacht te trekken.

Stranger video 'My name is Ahang' by Ahang Bashi
Ahang Bashi is a swedish/iranian documentary film student. She is 23 years old and lives in Göteborg,Sweden Ahang's film tells the story of a kid (herself) that felt great alienation because of her name, but learned by time to be proud and now laugh about her childhood hang ups.

theoneminutesjr. video 'Contact' by Anna Crosta
Two young people - contact. Anna's video tackles the universal issue of getting in contact with the "other". This complex issue of human communication is beautifully condensed in this video; Anna made it during the oneminutesjr. video workshop we facilitated in Liepaja (Latvia) in 2006.

Stranger video 'What color is white' by Cansin Ruta
Cansin made his video in 2008. He lives in Istanbul. His video is about identity, about perception of the other. His video was nominated for the MTV Stranger Award. He says: "Everyone can perceive the colors differently. Every culture has a color. Mine is white. But which white do you see?" Have a look!

Stranger Festival MTV Report
MTV Netherlands is our partner for the StrangerFestival. During the festival they shot a 5 min reportage, including interviews with the videomakers, the organisers, video extracts, workshops, parties and the Award ceremony. StrangerFestival 2008 Trailer English
From 3-5 July 2008 the ECF initiated the Strangerfestival in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. An international video festival for young video makers and lovers. 300 youngsters from all parts of Europe were invited to meet their peers, partcipate in professional workshops and maybe win one of the Awards. This trailer was made beforehand and broadcasted successfully online all over Europe.

We Initiate

That 'Other' City by Anthony Abou Khalifé
This video was made in the framework of ECF's AlmostReal Art project. Our project had several stages in time, one of them being "Storytelling". The idea was to gather visual narratives from young artsist, offering alternative views on the difficult Libanese social and political reality. Anthony's video was produced during a workshop we organised in Beirut, 2007. It is about a man who is obsessed by the idea that a desaster is bout to hit Beirut.

Ghosts Have No Shadow by Malek Anouti
This video was made in the framework of ECF's AlmostReal Art project. Our project had several stages in time, one of them being "Storytelling". The idea was to gather visual narratives from young artsist, offering alternative views on the difficult Libanese social and political reality. Malek's video was produced during a workshop we organised in Beirut, 2007. This fragment gives us a very strong, oppressing impression of the atmosphere in Beirut during the war.

This video was made in the framework of ECF's AlmostReal Art project. Our project had several stages in time, one of them being "Storytelling". The idea was to gather visual narratives from young artsist, offering alternative views on the difficult Libanese social and political reality. Corine's video was produced during a workshop we organised in Beirut, 2007. Her film is about closeness, just short of intimacy.

StrangerFestival 2008, 'Best of the World' Award category winning video by Rob Jacobs (Belgium)
".a priori" is the mane of the video. Video maker Rob Jacobs is 19 years; he made this film by randomly interviewing people on the streets. Two questions were asked: "What would you like to get" and "What would you like to give." Watch the video to see the results.

This video was made in the framework of ECF's AlmostReal Art project. This Art project had several stages in time, one of them being "Storytelling". The idea was to gather visual narratives from young artsist, offering alternative views on the difficult Libanese social and political reality. Rami's video was produced during a workshop we organised in this framework in Beirut in 2007. The fragment we show gives an impression of the atmosphere of Beirut by night at war. The original film is 20min long.

Stranger video 'Night acrobatics' by Eos Karlsson
Eos is 19 years old and lives in Sweden. Currently he is getting educated as an acrobat at a circuscollege. Film is also his passion, it´s "his artistic voice". Eos's video is an experiment: combining film and acrobatics. It's about his thoughts, his vision. He says:"People may doubt what I am saying, but they will believe what I am doing". theoneminutesjr. 2007, 'Accident', by Mohammed Majid al-Ghazali
This video was made during one of our partner's workshops (UNICEF) in Jordan. Mohammed's video tells his own story about the life in Iraq at war: he lost parts of his family and gets recruited as a child soldier. This direct narrative is even more strong because the attrocities of war are told in such a straigth forward and calm way.

"Flow" was made during one of our workshops in Beirut in November 2006. The workshop was held in partnership with our local partner SHAMS. Joseph's video tackles the topic "freedom of speech" in Lebanon.

Please Rewind Me Later by Roy Samaha
This video was made in the framework of ECF's AlmostReal Art project. Our project had several stages in time, one of them being "Storytelling". The idea was to gather visual narratives from young artsist, offering alternative views on the difficult Libanese social and political reality. Roy's video was produced during a workshop we organised in Beirut, 2007. His video is an investigation of his own past. he wonders how to make a selfportrait without giving in to clichés of how you present yourself.

StrangerFestival 2008, 'Amsterdam Award' winning video by Abid Mankachi (NL)
"Bien Venue" was made during our video workshop in Amsterdam in collaboration with the cultural centre "Nowhere" and the "Foundation for Happiness" (Stichting de Vrolijkheid. Amsterdam). The participants were asylumseekers and refugees living in The Netherlands. Abid's video is about prejudice with a suprising twist.

StrangerFestival 2008, 'Audience' category Award winning video by Lukasz Laskowski (Poland)
"Scriptwriter" is a video about reality and dream. The video was made by Lukasz himself in 2008; thanks to this award, his filmmaking career got a boost in Poland. Now he is a student at a filmschool and wants to make filmmaking his profession.

Slippage by Ali Cherri
This video was made in the framework of ECF's AlmostReal Art project. Our project had several stages in time, one of them being "Storytelling". The idea was to gather visual narratives from young artsist, offering alternative views on the difficult Libanese social and political reality. Ali's video was produced during a workshop we organised in Beirut, 2007. Ali's movie is a personal meditation about Beirut during the 2007 Israeli attack.

"Rakyp" was made during one of our workshops in Turkmenistan. Our local partner was a film school for youngsters. Palvan is 19 years old and he definately wants to become a professional filmmaker.

StrangerFestival 2008 'MTV Award' category winning video by Sylvain Koko (Congo)
This MTV award video "Alimentation d'un congolais moyen" by Sylvain Koko was shot during a workshop in the Democratic Republic of Congo organised by our partner UNICEF in August 2007. The theme they worked on was "Daily lives & dreams". This award winning video was shot during this workshop. A perfect example of the impact of a one shot video with a clear and strong message.

"Who I am (not)" is a humerous, simple and strong portrait on identity. Peter made this video by himself in 2008.

StrangerFestival 2008, 'Special Award' winning video by Nanda Swiersema (NL)
"I am Nanda" is the name of this video which received the "Surprise/Special Award" by the international jury; Nanda's impressive self-portrait on living with the down-syndrom was nominated in three categories. The video was made during a workshop in the Netherlands in April 2008 for young people with mental disabilities. ECF organised this workshop togehter with the Dutch Foundation for the Handicaped Child.

Stranger video 'Me&I' by Enrique Garde Rojas
This video was made by Enrique in 2008. He is 20 years old and student at a European design institute in Madrid. His video tries to explain his personality, the way he acts and how he tries to solve his internal crisis. It is a visual projection of his mind, his acts and his wishes; it is about the confrontation of the two sides of his personality. His video was nominated for the category Stranger Audience Award.

Stranger video 'Lost to sterile' by kat..p kk
This video is made by 25 year old "kat..p kk" from Austria, living currently in Taiwan. She made this video to show to what extend she feels that 'security' measures and surveillance can limit personal freedom.

Routes Princess Margriet Award laureate Stuart Hall - a video portrait
A video portrait of UK Professor Stuart Hall. Hall receives the first Princess Margriet Award for his groundbreaking work as an academic and researcher in the field of cultural diversity. Through his thought-provoking contributions, he has dominated the debate on cultural diversity in the UK for decades. In awarding the prize to Stuart Hall, the Routes Jury hopes that his work and ideas, which have influenced many European thinkers, find an even broader audience in Europe.

"Je m'exprime" was made during a workshop organised by our partner UNICEF. The workshop was held in Johannesburg, South Africa in March 2008. The workshop was held as part of the 5th World Summit on Media for Children. The partcipants originated from 5 different African countries. The productions focused on the convention of the Rights of the Child.

StrangerFestival 2008, 'Inside Out' category Award winning video by Zarina Pashtova (Russia)
Zarina's untitled video was made during our workshop in Russia in July 2007. It was organised by our partner UNICEF for young people from 5 republics in the North Caucasus and was part of the "peace and tolerance" training session. Zarina's video is also a one shot video, treating the delicate subject of loneliness.

StrangerFestival
Maciek made "The walk" by himself. It is a modern fairy tale; he "changed the wolfe for KingKong". Maciek always starts with a drawing and than dives into the process till the final video result crystlallises along the road. Maciek is 24 and lives in Gdanks. He definately want s to make filmmaking his profession.

Stranger in Egypt
There was a Stranger workshop in Cairo Egypt that has been initiated by a member of the Stranger focus group (Karim Shaaban). Buzz surrounding the workshop caught the attention of the Egyptian television station OTV and they did the following segment on it.

Routes laureates Jérôme Bel & Pichet Klunchun - a video portrait
A short impression of the winning performance "Pichet Klunchun & Myself". Their captivating dance performance shows, in a natural and enthralling way, how cultural differences are determined. The performance starts as a conversation between two choreographers who have little in common, with a deeper understanding of their differences developing as the dance proceeds. Bel and Klunchun demonstrate how moving, inspiring and even bonding the discovery of the other can be.

Stranger Festival @ Diversity Show
The Diversity Show is an international conference for the media industry organised by the Dutch public broadcasting company NPS. The stanger Festival was chosen as a Best Practice example for the session ‘How to make it in the media'. during the plenary session this video was shown. The central question was 'What do youngsters think about public television?'

Borka Pavićević laureate film
Borka Pavicevic is one of the two 2009 Routes Princess Margriet Award winners. The Routes Award for cultural diversity celebrates artists and thinkers whose work sheds valuable light on Europe's growing cultural diversity. Borka Pavicevic, dramaturge and Director of Belgrade's Centre for Cultural Decontamination, has shown defiant optimism in reviving the spirit of liberal arts and public discourse under truly difficult conditions, standing firm against intolerance, xenophobia and cultural homogenisation.
